About this work
A toy nutcracker soldier fills the frame in a close, straight-on portrait: tall powder-blue hat, rosy round cheeks, wide blue eyes, a fluffy white beard and a magnificent curled plum mustache. Gold braiding and fringed epaulettes add the one warm, metallic note.
The paint is laid on thick, with visible palette-knife ridges and a faint canvas grain showing through the flat pink field. Soft, even light and a dusty, sweet palette give it a gentle, nostalgic holiday mood.
