About this work
Three skeletons dance a joyful hoedown along a worn dirt path. The left one, in a battered witch hat, raises both arms; the banjo player in a white blouse and red neckerchief leaps at the center; and the right one tosses a dark top hat into the air. Behind them a huge pale harvest moon sits low in a pink-peach cloudy sky, and the skeletons are painted softly in warm ivory and peach tones.
A weathered farmhouse with warm glowing windows stands on the left, split-rail fences frame both sides and muted red-orange and cream pumpkins dot the foreground. Loose palette-knife and bristle strokes on linen, with thicker impasto in the moon and clouds, give a hazy, slightly desaturated patina in the manner of a romantic American rural landscape.
