About this work
A row of seven whimsical songbirds grips a thin black wire with small clawed feet, spanning nearly the full width of the picture. Each bird carries its own decorative pattern, from concentric target circles and stacked spirals to faceted diamonds and mosaic-tile patchwork feathers, in burnt terracotta, dusty teal, muted burgundy, olive gold and slate blue.
The figures are flat and frontal, built from heavy impasto with raised palette-knife ridges and dabs. Behind them, a warm parchment-toned ground shows coarse canvas grain, faint cracks and mottled staining, leaving plenty of quiet space above and below. The effect is playful, warm and nostalgic.
