Tall pines with rust-brown trunks and snow-dusted boughs stand at the left edge of a quiet lake. Beyond the water, pale hills fade into mist under a low, overcast sky.

The snow in the foreground is built up in thick, buttery strokes of white and cream. Dark rocks and tufts of dry golden grass break through it. The palette stays cool and hushed, with soft greys and blue-greys, and the dark trunks give the scene its weight.
