About this work
Broad horizontal bands of thick paint build a landscape from almost nothing but color and texture. A pale grey sky sits above blue-grey hills. Below them are bands of sage, ochre and near-black that read as marsh, mudflat and shoreline.
Smears of white and light grey mark patches of standing water. The knife work leaves ridges and torn edges, so the surface looks as weathered as the place it evokes. The mood is quiet, damp and subdued.
In the painting
Marsh · Distant hills · Overcast sky · Tidal pools · Mudflats
